From today, residents who lose their Macao travel documents while overseas will be able to access online assistance via their Macao One account, the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) announced yesterday.

The new service lets residents apply for an expedited one-time travel document from more than 200 Chinese embassies and consulates around the world.

The service uses facial recognition technology for identification, then issues a verification code by sms. This is valid for 24 hours.

Only those aged 18 and above can use the service, but they are able to request help for younger family members.

The service has been developed with support from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There is also a 24-hour emergency hotline for Macao residents stranded or needing help overseas: (853) 2857 3333.
