The government says it will set up four task forces to recruit skilled professionals for each of the sectors that Macao is seeking to develop as part of its economic diversification strategy.

Chao Chong Hang, the secretary of the Talent Development Committee, said at a committee meeting yesterday that the task forces would focus on the healthcare, technology, finance and event production industries.

Macau Post Daily reports that Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, who chairs the committee, also addressed yesterday’s gathering and said that top professionals were now the object of regional competition – particularly those who had an “international outlook” and were able to “innovate on their own.”

According to Chao, eligibility and assessment criteria for the talent import schemes will be announced in August.

He said the government was seeking to import around 1,000 professionals to Macao, without breaking down the number to be imported under the four individual schemes.

The local government is under pressure to solve Macao’s skill shortage, which analysts and researchers say is holding back the territory’s post-pandemic economic recovery.
