A ceremony was held on Friday to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1993 promulgation of the Basic Law for Macao.

Li Hongzhong, the vice chairman of the National People’s Congress standing committee, delivered the keynote address and told the gathering that the Basic Law had provided an “all-round legal guarantee” for the territory’s continuous development since it came into force in December 1999.

He added that efforts must be made to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, as well as the implementation of the overall jurisdiction of the central authorities.

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng meanwhile said Macao would continue to abide by the constitutional foundation the Basic Law provided and exploit the advantages conferred by the “One Country, Two Systems” political principle.

Around 1,000 guests attended the event, which was held at the China Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex. Among the audience were many officials involved in Macao’s reunification and the drafting of the Basic Law.
