Shenzhen plans to create a digital platform to better coordinate the computing power of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) as the region races to develop artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

According to the South China Morning Post, Shenzhen will build an AI supercomputing network linking commercial, academic and government systems across Macao, Hong Kong and the other eight Guangdong cities that make up the GBA.

It will also support research and development in AI and promote its application in industry and civic management, the report said.

In a statement released on its WeChat account, the Shenzhen municipal government said China’s tech hub would “strive to become a global pioneer city in AI and empower high-quality development”.

Shenzhen’s move follows a similar initiative launched earlier this month by the Beijing municipal government, which said it was providing state-funded computing power for commercial use, the Post reports.

China is keen to maximise the use of its computing resources as it seeks to push ahead with AI development amid US technology sanctions.
