The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) has teamed up with the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) to put on a two-day event centred around the global tropical timber market.
The first Global Legal & Sustainable Timber Forum (GLSTF) is scheduled to take place between 21 and 22 November, at the Galaxy International Convention Center.
The IPIM said in a statement that the GLSTF will “convene government officials from forestry departments of different countries, delegates of timber industry giants at home and abroad, accreditation authorities, experts and researchers to engage in constructive and proactive exchanges and dialogues.”

Topics covered are set to include timber industry trends, trade co-operation and sustainable development. Findings from two major research projects will also be unveiled.
These relate to the Global Timber Index Platform – which aims to provide transparent trade information to timber industry stakeholders – and to a blockchain-based timber traceability system.
Local academic Cai Tianji, associate dean of the University of Macau’s social sciences faculty, was involved in the index project. On the subject of whether Macao – a territory with no commercial forestry industry – was a suitable place to host a timber conference, he was positive, citing the SAR’s excellent MICE facilities and supportive academic environment.
